What Is FTP and How Is It Estimated?

FTP (Functional Threshold Power) is the highest steady power a cyclist can typically sustain for about one hour. FTP is affected by muscle fatigue which Xert models as a depletion of glycogen in the muscles. The FTP estimate from this page is based on Xert's new 2.0 MPA model (currently in development) using the uploaded ride. Note: The resulting estimate is not saved to your Xert account.

  • What other values are returned besides FTP?

    The estimator also reports PP (Peak Power), LTP (Lower Threshold Power), and HIE (High Intensity Energy).

  • What is the required effort for this to work?

    Ideally, the ride should include repeated efforts above FTP for at least 2 to 3 minutes and where you reach your limit/exhaustion.

  • How accurate is a single-ride FTP estimate?

    It is useful for a quick check, but full training-history analysis is typically more accurate and stable.
